Costume choices

Here are a few items of clothing I would like my models to style their clothing off of. Straight away, someone wearing this type of clothing will attract an audience, specifically the audience to a rock-style of magazine.

Double Page Spread Image

I would like to create an image like this for my double page spread. I will use an amp as a prop just as they do in the picture and I will use the three models I will be using for my front cover image.

This is another image I like. I will experiment with different numbers of models so I can choose which style I like better. This would be a good template for an image with just one model for my front cover.

Base Pictures

I will be using the images below to base my original image off of.
These images are great models for my image as they are full length as I would like mine to be and they feature 3 people as I will also be using 3 people in my original images.

Photo shoot Plans for my Magazine

Who?
I will be asking some of my friends if they are able to participate in the photo shoot and hoping that at least 3 of them will agree as I will need 3 people for my shot.

Where?
I will be using a room in my house that has a solid colour in the background as this will be easier if I need to remove the background. If the weather isn't to bad I would also like to try and use my back garden where I wouldn't have to remove the background.

Props?
If I am taking the shots inside I will get guitars and amps and anything musical in my house to add to the picture as background props for the front cover. I will use the guitars and amps more to take pictures for the contents page and for the double page spread as this will add more variety to the pictures. If I decide to take my pictures outside I will not be using props.

Costumes?
I will ensure that the models for my photo shoot have costumes that work well together and are right for the shot. They won't be too dark or all the same but the style will be a 'Rock' style.

When?
Sunday 1st December or Saturday 7th December.

Mission Statement and Target Audience

KERRANG

MISSION STATEMENT

Kerrang! will ensure that we are constantly appealing to our spectrum of readers. From the younger teenage readers who are more open to different genres of rock music – from EMO to Thrash etc, to the readers who respect Kerrang! as an authority when it comes to our scene’s heritage bands.

Each issue will include a balance of bands and scenes to guarantee that we’re providing for our readers’ need for variety and their passionate appetite for their favourite bands as well as their desire to be introduced to new music within our world.
We will focus on the biggest things that are going on in our world each week, as well as guaranteeing that we are giving our main base of younger readers everything they need to get into and on top of this the interest in older, harder bands, cementing our role as an educator.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Kerrang! Targets 15-34s

Rock Sound

Rock Sound does not a mission statement and they do not state a target audience for their magazine. Rock Sound is only published by one man which therefor makes it harder to detect these facts. Rock sound is very similar to Kerrang! in appearance and with the content so the target audience should be around the same age.

I will be researching the target audience for Rock Sound and Kerrang as I will be basing my magazines style off of these magazines.

Here is my completed slideshow on

Conventions - House Style

Another generic convention of music magazines that I have commented on is the House Style. The house style of a magazine is a unique selling point as they are usually suited to their audience.

Conventions - Mast Head

I have commented on the use of a mast head when researching magazines. A mast head is a very generic convention of a music magazine as this shows the name and/or logo of the specific magazine. Sometimes the mast head may be covered slightly but if magazines are popular enough, the audience of that particular magazine will be able to recognise it easily.

Research on Generic Conventions of Music Magazines

The generic conventions of music magazines;

  • Mast head - The name and logo of the magazine usually found across the top of the magazine.
  • White Space - Parts of the page that have been left without a picture of text. Not necessarily white.
  • Sell Lines- Words or phrases on the cover of a magazine which helps to catch the attention of the audience and helps to sell the magazine. (Eg. 'Free' and 'Win').
  • House style - A distinctive design for a magazine which separates it from others.
  • Barcode and price - The barcode holds all the information about the price and issue number of the magazine. These will usually be found along with the price at the bottom of the magazine.

My Magazines for Conventions

These are the two magazines I will be looking at to compare music magazine conventions.

Thursday, 17 October 2013

I used small illustrations on the footer of my magazine to round off the professional look. As both of the illustrations are black and white they fit in well with the house style.

House Style

I have chosen a specific house style for my magazine which I have used on my front cover and on my contents page. I have chosen light colours contrasting with darker colours to ensure all the text is easy to read yet my magazine will stand out. The text is big enough to read yet small enough to fit all information on. The colours would be the main colours of 'Boulevard High' which ensure the magazine has a professional element.

Drop Shadow Effect

I used the effects tool to create a drop shadow on some of my lighter text to ensure it has a professional appearance and can be read easily.
I have also used this drop shadow effect on other layers of my work to ensure the house style stays similar throughout all of my work.

My Chosen Picture

I chose this picture because;
  • It is a good medium-close up shot
  • The lighting is good
  • The leaflet shows that this is for a school
  • There is a boy and a girl which shows it is a mixed school
  • She has a happy expression
  • There is room for text on the right hand side
